12th Century Former Royal Residence - Chateau de Annecy

Perched on a hill overlooking charming Old Town Annecy, the Chateau de Annecy stands as a powerful testament to the political and social shifts of the Savoy region. Built and expanded between the 13th and 16th centuries, it originally served as the main residence for the powerful Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours.

The castle's role as a ducal residence was interrupted in 1401 when it passed to the House of Savoy, and its function as an elegant home finally ended after it was seized by French King Louis XIII in 1630. Abandoned by its nobility, the structure began a long period of military and social service, functioning as a military barracks during the French Revolution and both World Wars.

In the mid-20th century, the castle's life took a humanitarian turn when, during a severe housing crisis, it was occupied by homeless people. Recognizing the site's importance and desperate need for restoration, the City of Annecy acquired the castle in 1953. Following years of work, the complex was reborn in 1961 as a museum dedicated to preserving local culture through both permanent and temporary exhibitions on regional history, art, and the natural environment.
