A Former Headquarters For Unmarried German Merchants - House Of Blackheads

The House of Blackheads is located in the heart of Latvia’s Old Riga, near Town Hall Square. Originally called the New House, it was built in 1334 as part of the Riga Town Hall Square and has been rebuilt several times since 1522. It was initially constructed as a meeting and celebration venue for various social organizations and was the largest public building in Riga at the time. In the 17th century the sole residents were the Brotherhood of Blackheads—a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreign traders, mostly of German origin.

This building and most of the old town was bombed in the 1941 battle between the Nazi German and Soviet armies, and what remained was demolished by the Soviet Government in 1948. The building was rebuilt between 1996 and 2000 based on historical records and the funds were mainly provided by the city of Riga, and other private donations and the building was officially opened in 1999.

Today the House of the Blackheads is an event center and museum. In the upper level are located grand ballrooms, where historically many prestigious events were held including welcoming ceremonies for kings, queens and presidents, as well as cultural events.

This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
