A Small City On Cape Breton Island - Sydney, Nova Scotia
Sydney, Nova Scotia is a small yet culturally rich city located on Cape Breton Island, in eastern Canada. While it isn’t as large or bustling as other Canadian cities, Sydney offers a deeply authentic and scenic experience, rooted in maritime charm, Celtic heritage, and a strong sense of community.
Along the waterfront, you'll find the 60-foot-tall Big Fiddle, a striking tribute to Cape Breton’s rich Celtic musical traditions. The town has deep historic ties to the Scottish, Irish, Acadian, and Mi’kmaq peoples, whose influences remain visible in local culture, music, and storytelling.
Sydney also served as Cape Breton Island’s colonial capital until 1820, when the colony was merged with Nova Scotia and the capital was moved to Halifax.
