Extraordinary 13th Century Stained Glass Windows - Sainte-Chapelle
Sainte-Chapelle is a stunning Gothic royal chapel in Paris, renowned for its extraordinary stained glass. Built in the 13th century by King Louis IX, it was created to house precious Christian relics, including the Crown of Thorns. The chapel is located on the Ile de la Cite, within the medieval Palais de la Cite, the former residence of the Kings of France and now part of the Palais de Justice.
Designed in the Rayonnant Gothic style, Sainte-Chapelle consists of two levels. The lower chapel, richly painted and more intimate, was used by palace staff. The upper chapel, reserved for the king and the sacred relics, is the true masterpiece.
The upper chapel is famed for its 15 towering stained-glass windows, rising nearly 50 feet high. These windows depict more than 1,100 biblical scenes, spanning from Genesis to the Resurrection, and bathe the interior in a jewel-like glow of blues, reds, and golds. The extensive use of glass makes the walls appear to dissolve, creating the impression of standing inside a radiant reliquary.
Although damaged during the French Revolution, Sainte-Chapelle was carefully restored in the 19th century and today preserves one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass in the world. Celebrated not for its size but for its light, color, and spiritual intensity, it remains one of the most breathtaking medieval interiors in Europe.
