Historic Kennebec Riverfront - Augusta, Maine

The Historic Downtown Augusta area is located on the Kennebec River in the heart of Maine’s Capitol. Water Street business district is filled with 19th century commercial architecture. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Vickery apartment building was built in 1895, and designed by John C. Spotford

The former government building at 295 Water Street was built between 1886 and 1890 in the Romanesque Revival style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Another one of the twenty-five decorated sturgeons on Water Street. Sturgeons swim, frolic and spawn here in the Kennebec River.

Museum in the Streets signs are installed at featured sites along Water, Front, Cony, Willow and Canal Streets.

The next few images are of Old Fort Western, built in 1754, and is America’s oldest surviving wooden fort.

The Maine State House on State Street was completed in 1832, using Maine granite.

What you should know:

• The historical downtown district is walkable.

• There is a selection of dining options.

• You could spend a few hours exploring the historical district.

• On the street parking is available; check posted parking regulations signs.
