Nazare is a charming and picturesque coastal town on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, best known for its enormous waves and beautiful beaches. During the winter months, the town becomes a major destination for big-wave surfers from around the world. The enormous waves are created by the Nazare Canyon, a deep underwater canyon just offshore that funnels and amplifies the power of the Atlantic Ocean. This unique natural feature has helped make Nazare one of the world’s most famous destinations for extreme surfing.
The town itself offers much more than spectacular waves. The older part of Nazare sits on a hilltop overlooking the beach, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can explore the narrow streets, traditional houses, local shops, and restaurants while enjoying the town’s relaxed seaside atmosphere.
