Lausanne’s Iconic Cathedral - Notre Dame Lausanne

The city of Lausanne climbs steeply from the shores of Lake Geneva, and the closer you get to the old town, the more the modern city fades into cobblestones, church bells, and centuries of history. Long before you reach the cathedral, you’ll spot its spire rising above the rooftops like a stone crown over Lausanne. Perched high above the old town, Lausanne Cathedral commands sweeping views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Construction of this Gothic masterpiece began around 1170 and continued well into the 13th century, before it was consecrated in 1275 in the presence of Pope Gregory X and Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg.

The cathedral also keeps alive one of Europe’s oldest living traditions. Each night, between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., the cathedral’s night watchman calls out the hour from the bell tower — a ritual that has continued unbroken since the Middle Ages, echoing through the streets of Lausanne for more than 600 years.

This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
