Charles Deering was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was the son of William Deering, founder of Deering Harvester McCormick-International Harvester Company

Eastern State was the world’s first true penitentiary. It was operational from 1829 to 1971 and is renowned for its innovative architecture and penal philosophy.

It is hard to believe that a man who was rescued and taken care of by slaves, managed to become a slave trader, buying and selling people like property. The Sorrel family lived here until 1859 when it was sold it to a Connecticut businessman named Henry Weed.
