Halifax is the largest urban area in Atlantic Canada and is the traditional and trendy capital of the province of Nova Scotia. Between the impressive waterfront and colorful, bustling streets, Halifax is a picturesque city. The busy waterfront has the longest downtown boardwalks in the world with galleries, naval museums, food and drink options or you can just relax and take in the atmosphere.

This stairway leading into the Halifax Harbor is named Queen’s Landing. The stairway is where people can swim, fish or launch kayaks.

A beautiful old building in downtown Halifax

Province House is the home of Nova Scotia’s House of Assembly, and they have met here since 1819.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia was founded in 1908, and in 1988 moved to its present home in the historic Dominion Building, built in 1865.

The Pacifico Dance Club resides in the former Bank of Commerce Building built in 1906.

Halifax City Hall was built in 1890, and is the oldest public building in Nova Scotia.

St. Paul’s Evangelic Anglican Church was founded in 1749

The Town Clock is the most recognizable buildings in Halifax, commissioned by Prince Edward, Duke of Ken, and completed in 1803.

The Citadel is Halifax’s most important fortification and the 19th-century fort grounds is a great place to just relax or have a picnic. The Citadel is on the UNESCO Heritage Site list.

“The Emigrant Statue” erected in 2013, honoring those who left their homes to find a new life in Canada.

George’s Island Lighthouse was built in 1917 and is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard.

What you should know:

You will need a passport and any other credentials needed when crossing into Canada from the United States.
There are paid parking lots as well as on the street parking. Remember to check posted parking regulations signs.
Halifax has a walkable downtown and waterfront area.
There is a walking trail on the waterfront.
There are many different dining and entertainment options.
Public restrooms are available on the waterfront.
The currency used is the Canadian Dollar.
Tipping 18-20% for good service is customary.
