The Oldest University In The World - University of al-Qarawiyyin
Most people might assume that the oldest university is in world would be in Europe, but that’s not the case. According to the Guinness World Records and UNESCO, the University of Al Quaraouiyine is the oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in the world to grant degrees. Established in 859, it was the first university founded by a woman—and notably, a Muslim woman. Fatima al-Fihri used her inheritance from her wealthy father to establish the university, which initially began as an associated school (known as a madrasa) and a mosque. Over time, it grew into a renowned place of higher education. The university also introduced the system of awarding degrees based on different levels of study.
Although it initially focused on religious instruction, its curriculum quickly expanded to include subjects such as logic, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy, among others.
The university's building itself is an impressive complex of historical Moroccan and Islamic architecture, showcasing elements from various periods of Moroccan history.
