A Glimpse Of Old Bangkok - On The Canals

Bangkok reveals itself in layers, but nowhere is its older soul more visible than along its canals. Known as khlongs, these narrow waterways cut quietly through the city, offering a striking contrast to the traffic and high-rises beyond their banks.

Wooden houses on stilts gently lean over the canal, their reflections rippling below. Residents go about their daily routines largely undisturbed by the occasional boat passing through.

Temples appear unexpectedly, their ornate roofs rising above clusters of greenery, while small docks and floating vendors hint at a way of life that has endured despite the city’s rapid modernization.

The canals may no longer define Bangkok as they once did, but drifting through them offers something rare: a moment of stillness and authenticity in a city that rarely slows down.

Bangkok used to be called the “Venice of the East” because of its huge canal network . Today, most canals are gone, but the remaining ones still show how the city used to function.

What you should know:

• Midday heat in Bangkok is intense. The best times to go are mornings or late afternoons.

• Longtail boat are faster and louder but have a more adventurous feel. Smaller boats are quieter and more relaxed. If you want scenery and photos, slower is usually better.

• You may get light spray from the canal water.

• Avoid bulky bags—they’re awkward in narrow boats.

• You should try and carry your own toilet paper when traveling in Thailand and you will be asked to place in provided bins and not be flushed in most places because of the septic systems.

• Locals are generally friendly but reserved – polite and helpful.

• Smile goes a long way—Thai culture values politeness and calmness.

• It’s hot and humid year-round—hydrate constantly and only use with bottled water.

• Wear lightweight clothes and sunscreen.
