A Natural Swiss Alps Wonder - Aare Gorge

The Aare Gorge is a stunning, deep, narrow limestone canyon carved by the Aare River near Meiringen, Switzerland featuring sturdy wooden walkways lead through a narrow canyon where turquoise glacial water moves below. along its walls, stunning blue water, and geological formations. This is a testament to what the power of water can do.

Part of the natural formation was adapted during World War II when Switzerland built an extensive network of underground defenses as part of its National Redoubt strategy. The idea was simple but bold: if the country were invaded, the Swiss Army would retreat into the Alps and defend key mountain passes, tunnels, and valleys from fortified positions carved directly into the rock. These caverns typically housed troops, ammunition, communication equipment, and sometimes small gun or observation posts. After the threat subsided, many of these fortifications were gradually decommissioned, leaving behind quiet reminders of Switzerland’s wartime preparations.

• The one way walk through the entire gore can be done in just under an hour.

• There is a cafe on site.

• Dogs are welcome on a short leash and free of charge.

• Free parking is available.

• There are walking trails through the gorge.

• Staff are friendly and informative and many speak English.

• Admission can be purchased at the entrance.
