The Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France, is one of the largest and most impressive medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Part fortress, part palace, it once served as the official residence of the popes during the 14th century, when Avignon became the center of Western Christianity. Within its massive stone walls, six papal conclaves were held, shaping the future of the Church. Today, the palace stands as a powerful reminder of its past and, in 1995, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkable architecture and historical significance.
