A Russian Cathedral In Nice France - St Nicholas Cathedral

During my last visit to Nice, I had the opportunity to visit the St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, one of the city’s most striking landmarks. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and built by the Russian Imperial family for the growing Russian community on the French Riviera, the cathedral was constructed between 1902 and 1912. It is an exquisite example of Russian Revival architecture, with its colorful onion domes and ornate facades. Inside, the atmosphere is serene and richly adorned with gilded details, icons, and the lingering scent of incense. The cathedral stands as a vivid reminder of Nice’s historic connection to Russia and remains both an active place of worship and a symbol of cultural harmony.

Nearby, the smaller Chapel of Tsarevitch Nicolas Alexandrovitch serves as a poignant counterpart. Built in 1867 to honor the eldest son of Tsar Alexander II, who died in Nice in 1865 at the age of twenty-one, the chapel stands on the very site where the young heir passed away. Commissioned by his grieving parents, it offers a quiet and touching reminder of the long-standing ties between Russia and the French Riviera—ties that would later inspire the construction of the grand cathedral itself.

This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
