Behind A Quite Staircase In Washington Heights - Sylvan Terrace
Tucked behind a stone staircase in upper Manhattan is a street that does not feel like New York City at all.
New York City is loud, fast, and constantly moving—but hidden behind a quiet staircase in Washington Heights, there’s a street frozen in time. Sylvan Terrace feels less like Manhattan and more like a forgotten village, where 19th-century homes line a cobblestone path and the city noise fades into the background.
Sylvan Terrace is lined with 20 nearly identical wooden townhouses, their soft yellow facades accented by deep green shutters and dark stoops. The symmetry is striking, almost storybook-like. It’s quiet here—eerily quiet for New York—and that silence only adds to the magic.
Built in the 1880s, Sylvan Terrace originally served as housing for working- and middle-class residents during a time when New York City was expanding northward. The street itself once functioned as a carriage path leading to the historic Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest surviving house in Manhattan.
Over time, the homes fell into disrepair, but a careful restoration in the late 20th century brought them back to life, and today, they stand as one of the rare preserved glimpses into 19th-century residential life in the city.
Walking down the terrace, it’s easy to imagine a completely different New York—one without skyscrapers, where life moved at a slower, quieter pace.
Want to live here? When listings appear, they’re considered “rare opportunities” and most homes here typically fall between $1.3M and $1.8M+

There is no gate or entrance sign.
The stairway looks like a normal residential street entrance. You can easily walk past it if you’re not looking carefully.
Be respectful people live here.
