Crowned By A Gilded Statue Of Virgin Mary - Notre Dame des Doms
Notre-Dame des Doms has survived sieges, religious wars, and the political upheavals of the French Revolution. While parts were damaged during the Revolution, restoration work in the 19th century helped preserve the structure and reassert its role as a spiritual landmark.
The Romanesque-style cathedral is compact and dignified rather than grand, built of pale limestone with a soaring bell tower crowned by a large gilded statue of the Virgin Mary.
The atmosphere inside is cool and quiet. The nave is small and softly lit, with round Romanesque arches and thick pillars that give it a sense of age. A particularly beautiful feature is the 12th-century carved marble altar, one of the cathedral’s treasures, along with the richly decorated side chapels and the tombs of several Avignon popes and bishops.
This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
