The Rome Of France - Nimes

Nîmes is a historic city located in the Occitanie region of southern France, often called the "Rome of France" due to its remarkable Roman heritage. Once a major Roman colony, Nîmes thrived as an important stop along the Via Domitia, the Roman road that connected Italy to Spain.

Its ancient past is still visible today in landmarks such as the Arena of Nîmes, a Roman amphitheater that remains in use for concerts, events, and traditional festivals. Another iconic site is the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple built around 2 AD. It owes its exceptional preservation to continuous use over the centuries—as a church, town hall, stable, and museum. Because it was never abandoned, the temple escaped the fate of many other Roman buildings. In 2023, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Jardins de la Fontaine is another notable site—a beautiful public garden with fountains and Roman ruins, developed around a natural spring that was central to the city’s founding. It is considered one of Europe’s first public gardens. Within the garden lies the Temple of Diana, a mysterious and architecturally unique Roman building of uncertain original purpose, believed to be part of a larger Roman sanctuary.

In addition to its Roman heritage, Nîmes was once a major textile-producing center and is famously known as the birthplace of denim fabric. The word "denim" comes from "serge de Nîmes", the name of a sturdy fabric first produced in the city.
