French Artist Haven - Gordes

Perched dramatically on the edge of the Vaucluse plateau, Gordes is often hailed as one of the most beautiful villages in Provence. Its golden-stone houses cascade down the hillside in a harmonious blend of architecture and landscape, framed by sweeping views over the Luberon Valley.

The village itself is compact — a labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, arched passageways, and shaded squares that invite slow wandering. Dominating the skyline are the imposing castle and the Saint Firmin Church, enduring symbols of Gordes’ medieval strength and its centuries of defense against invading forces.

Gordes traces its origins back to Roman times but evolved over the centuries into a haven for artists and writers, including Marc Chagall, who found inspiration in its light and serenity. Today, about 2,000 “Gordians” call the village home, with tourism as its lifeblood.

Gordes carries the scars of a tough past: plague, earthquakes, even bombings during the Second World War. Somehow, it always rebuilt, a testament to the resilience that defines so much of Provence.

What you should know:

• Credit/debit cards are widely accepted.

• Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) are very common.

• Locals are generally friendly, polite and helpful.

• The main official language is French, but many people do speak English.

• The currency is the Euro (EU).

• Local paid parking is available.

• Walking is a great way to get around.

• You will need a valid passport and a power convertor if you are coming from the US.

• There are many restaurant and food options.

• You could spend a couple of hours exploring here.

• Tipping is not expected but some people do round up.
