Medieval Castle On Lake Geneva - Chateau de Chillon

The almost 1,000 year-old Chateau de Chillon is one of the most famous and most photographed castles in Switzerland. Perched on a small rocky island along the shores of Lake Geneva, near Montreux, it looks like something lifted straight from a fairytale with stone towers rising out of the water, mountains framing the background, and the lake reflecting it all like glass.

From the 12th to the 16th century, Chillon served as both fortress and residence, guarding the lake and housing the Savoy nobility. Its walls have seen banquets, battles, and political intrigues — as well as darker chapters.

One of the castle’s most famous stories is that of Francois Bonivard, a Genevan monk and political prisoner who was chained for years in Chillon’s underground dungeon in the 1500’s. Centuries later, Lord Byron visited and immortalized Bonivard’s story in his poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.” Byron even carved his name into one of the pillars.

This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
