Resort Town On Lake Maggiore - Stresa, Italy

I only had a couple of hours to take in Stresa—just enough time, I thought, for a quiet lakeside stroll. But even in that short window, the town unfolded with an effortless charm: palm trees swaying in the breeze, beds of bright flowers spilling toward the promenade, and those stately 19th-century Belle Epoque hotels rising along the waterfront, faded glamor in the best possible way. Stresa gets you with softness—calm water, slow ferries drifting between the islands, mountains layered like watercolors in the distance, and a sense of gentle old-world beauty that settles over everything. The architecture mirrors the mood: pastel facades, iron balconies, ornate hotel details from an era when travel was an art form.

I walked a few streets back from the promenade and the scene becomes tidy lanes, shuttered windows, and a postcard-perfect rhythm that makes even a brief visit feel timeless.

The history of the Milan Speranza Au Lac started back in 1859 when it was built as Speranza Inn. In 1930 it was transformed into a paper Hoel by Carlo Alberto.

Regina Palace Hotel opened in 1908, rising from the former Villa De Marin to become a landmark of the Belle Epoque era on Lake Maggiore.

What you should know:

• Credit/debit cards are widely accepted.

• Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) are very common.

• Locals are friendly and helpful.

• The official language is Italian, but many people do speak English.

• The currency is the Euro (EU).

• The is both free and paid street and lot parking available.

• Walking or biking is a great way to get around the city.

• You will need a valid passport and a power convertor if you are coming from the US.

• There are many restaurant and food options.

• Tipping is not expected but some people do round up.
