The Largest Orthodox Church in Northern & Western Europe - Uspenski Cathedral

The Uspenski Cathedral is the main cathedral for both the Orthodox Parish and the Diocese of Helsinki. It is considered the largest Orthodox church in Northern and Western Europe. At the time of its construction, Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, and the Orthodox Parish needed a larger building to serve its growing population.

The cathedral’s size is emphasized by its 108-foot central cupola and its location on the highest hill in the Katajanokka district. It was designed by Russian architect Aleksei M. Gornostajev, and after his death in 1862, Ivan Varek was chosen to continue his work.

Construction began in 1859, and the cathedral was consecrated on October 25, 1868. The project was mainly funded through donations from parishioners.
