A Former Sea Fortress Near Helsinki -Suomenlinna Island
Suomenlinna, often called the ‘Castle of Finland’, is a living piece of European military history just a short ferry ride from Helsinki. Ironically, there’s no actual castle.
I hadn’t even heard of Suomenlinna until visiting Finland — but it turned out to be a nice surprise.
The Swedes began building this massive sea fortress in 1748 as a bastion against the ever-advancing Russians, back when Finland was still under Swedish rule (1748–1808). Since then, Suomenlinna has served under three different states — Sweden, Russia, and Finland — each using it as a strategic naval stronghold against the enemies of their time.
Today, the fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — part fortress, part village, and part scenic escape. It spans six interconnected islands, with tunnels, historic fortifications, museums, and around 800 residents who call it home.
Since we visited later in the day, our time there was a bit limited, and we only made it to two of the six islands — Iso Mustasaari and Susisaari — missing out on the six museums. Even so, the visit offered a glimpse into centuries of layered history surrounded by stunning sea views.
This is what caught my eye - I hope you enjoy!
